Matched Betting
What it is
Taking a bookmaker's sign-up offer or free bet, then betting against the same outcome on an exchange so both results cancel out. The match result stops mattering: you lose a few pence on the qualifying bet, then convert most of the free bet into cash. It is arithmetic rather than a punt, but it is still a gambling product, and it only works if you follow the numbers exactly, every time.

Step by step
- 1
Check it is for you
You need to be 18+ and UK-based, and not self-excluded or signed up to GAMSTOP. If gambling has ever been a problem for you, skip this one. The accounts and the products are exactly the same ones.
- 2
Set aside a starting bank
£100–£200 is enough. The money is not at risk in the mathematical sense, but it sits locked across two accounts until bets settle, so use cash you will not need this week.
- 3
Open an exchange account
Smarkets or Betfair Exchange. This is the side that lets you bet against an outcome, which is what cancels out the bookmaker bet. Note its commission rate, because it comes out of your profit.
- 4
Work the offer with the matcher
OddSync's Matched Betting tab lists live offers with the bookmaker and exchange prices side by side. Pick the match with the smallest gap between the two. That gap is your qualifying loss, usually well under £1.
- 5
Qualify, then use the free bet
Place the bookmaker bet and the opposing exchange bet together, not minutes apart, or the prices move under you. Once the free bet lands, repeat it at higher odds to keep more of it: a £20 free bet typically returns £15 to £16 in cash.
- 6
Log every single bet
Record the back stake, lay stake, liability and settled profit each time. Keep it in your Side Hustles tracker so you can see your real hourly rate and spot an offer that is not worth doing.
