Step by step
- 1
Register your food business
Register with your local council at least 28 days before you start trading, even from home. It is free in most areas, and they will inspect your kitchen and give a food hygiene rating.
- 2
Get food hygiene trained
A Level 2 food hygiene certificate (cheap and online) is expected by customers, insurers and councils.
- 3
Handle allergens properly
You must be able to tell customers about the 14 major allergens, and food packed before sale needs a full ingredients label with allergens highlighted.
- 4
Get insured
Public liability and product liability cover are a must when selling food.
- 5
Price for time, not just ingredients
Custom cakes often sell for £30–£150 or more depending on size and design. Include ingredients, packaging, your time and delivery.
