What it is

Looking after other people's children in their own home: evenings, weekends, school holidays and after-school pick ups. Parents pay for trust above all, so the work comes from references, checks and word of mouth.

How to start a babysitting business, step by step

Step by step

  1. 1

    Get your checks and training

Join a childcare site such as Childcare.co.uk and ask what DBS checks they offer. Self-employed sitters may only be able to get a basic check, and the rules have been changing, so check the DBS pages on gov.uk. A paediatric first aid course is the biggest trust builder.

  2. 2

    Know the rules

You must register as a childminder if you look after children under 8 for more than 2 hours a day, for payment. Nannies working in the child's home and babysitters working between 6pm and 2am are exempt, though you can register voluntarily. Check gov.uk before you start.

  3. 3

    Create a strong profile

A friendly photo, your experience, your checks and 2 or 3 references from families or schools. Say what ages you are happy with.

  4. 4

    Set clear rates

Around £11–£15 an hour depending on where you live, more for several children, late finishes or last minute bookings. Agree it in writing so there are no awkward conversations.

  5. 5

    Build a few regular families

Offer a no pressure meet and greet first. Two or three regular families (a standing Friday night, school pick ups) beat chasing one off jobs.
