Handyman Business
What it is
Running your own local handyman business: fixing, fitting and assembling for homeowners and landlords. Unlike taking jobs through an app, you own the customer relationships, set your own prices and build a list of regulars.

Step by step
- 1
Stick to what you can do well
Flat pack, shelves, curtain poles, painting, tap washers, tiling and fence repairs. Say no to anything you are not confident with.
- 2
Know what is off limits
Gas work must be done by a Gas Safe registered engineer, and much electrical work is notifiable under building regulations. Refer these to qualified tradespeople.
- 3
Get insured and kitted out
Public liability insurance, a solid toolkit and a van or car with room to carry gear.
- 4
Price by the hour with a minimum
Around £30–£40 an hour outside London is typical, with a call-out minimum of an hour or two. Materials are extra, so agree them before you buy.
