Care Work & Gig Shifts
What it is
Picking up shifts when it suits you: care or support work, hospitality, events, warehouses and retail. Apps and agencies find the shifts and pay weekly, so it is about the quickest way to earn without setting up a business.

Step by step
- 1
Choose your sector
Care and support work pays steadily and needs checks; hospitality and events are quick to start; warehouses pay well for early starts.
- 2
Get your paperwork ready
Proof of right to work, ID, two references and, for care work, a DBS check (the agency usually arranges it). Some roles want a food hygiene or manual handling certificate.
- 3
Join two or three platforms
Indeed Flex, Coople, local care agencies and the NHS bank (NHS Professionals) all take sign ups. More choice means fewer gaps.
- 4
Take the best shifts
The National Living Wage is £12.71 an hour for ages 21 and over (£10.85 for 18 to 20). Weekends, nights and bank holidays often pay a premium. Build a track record and good ratings so you get picked first.
- 5
Check how you are paid
Agencies usually pay through PAYE, so tax is sorted. If you are self-employed on a platform you must report it yourself. Track every shift in OddSync.
